Approximately 67 percent of the registered voters in Roosevelt County voted for Republican Barbara A. George as the probate judge.
George defeated Democratic opponent Mark B. Paternoster by 2,274 votes.
“I feel that I can be of a great help to the residents of Roosevelt County,” George said after the election. “This county and its residents have been very good to me.”
George said she has been a resident of Roosevelt County for 42 years, and taught at Portales High School for 25 years.
For eight years she was the coach of the mock trial team, during that time the team won two state championships and made two nationals appearances, George said.

After retiring from teaching, George said she became involved with the Roosevelt County Teen Court and was appointed as an alternate to the Municipal Judge.
“I have always had a interest in law,” George said. “I feel that I will be able to learn what I need to fulfill and exceed the requirements of this office.”
