Hounds, Falcons battle to tie

PORTALES — Twenty seconds away from victory, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Texas-Permian Basin Tuesday at the ENMU pitch.

Sophomore midfielder Edgar Bear scored his first goal of the season and added an assist later for the Greyhounds (1-1-1), who played to a tie for the first time in five matches against the Falcons (3-1-1).

Sophomore forward Emerson Rodrigues put the Hounds in front in the fifth minute with his third goal of the season, coming from about 10 yards out off a pass from Bear. That score held until Permian Basin (5-2-1) counted on an unassisted goal by Marcelo Andre’s with less than 25 minutes left in regulation.

Bear then took a through pass from sophomore Gerardo Monarrez to put the Hounds back in front with just under 17 minutes left. Justin Linthicum beat ENMU goalkeeper Peter Horak on a rebound shot to force the first of two sudden-death, 10-minute overtimes.

Horak had seven saves to help keep the Hounds in the match.

The Hounds continue their season-opening, five-match homestand this weekend, opening Southwest Soccer Conference play against Missouri Southern at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
