Mother sentenced for truancy charges

A 45-year-old Clovis woman was sentenced to six months probation after allowing her daughter to miss 65 days of middle school last year, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office.

As conditions of her guilty plea, the woman must ensure her daughter attend school, attend a 16-week parenting program, undergo drug and alcohol screening and counseling and pay $55 in court fines and fees, the release said.

It was her second offense, court records show.

In April the court closed the first case against her, which stemmed from the 2006-2007 school year, acknowledging the woman completed 25 hours of community service, attended parenting classes and paid $67 in fines and fees, satisfying her obligations.

The next day, she was arrested on new charges of failure to enforce compulsory school attendance, records show.

Failure to enforce compulsory school attendance is a misdemeanor.
