Tribute to a golfer

Cecil Davis, a 1950 Clovis High School graduate and one of the region’s all-time great athletes, died Aug. 8 in Albuquerque.

Davis, a multi-sport star who played minor league baseball and was inducted into the Wayland Baptist University Athletic Hall of Honor, was an avid golfer — and still a good one — well into his 70s.

He scored a hole-in-one and a double eagle when he was 72.

His obituary was published in Thursday’s Clovis and Portales newspapers and family members suggested a tribute:

“In lieu of flowers, donate to your favorite charity and/or take a friend golfing and send scores to the Davis family.”

Davis’ brother Joe Roy Davis still lives in Clovis.
