Melrose firefighter arrested on drug charges

A Melrose volunteer firefighter and a female associate were arrested Friday evening by Curry County Sheriff’s investigators for attempted manufacturing of methamphetamine and distribution of marijuana.

Harley Swopes, 22, and Jennifer Lane, 35, were arrested by Melrose police and sheriff’s officers following an extensive investigation by the Region V Drug Task Force, sheriff’s investigators and state police, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Swopes is being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center on $100,000 bond. Lane was released on $50,000 bond Friday night, according to jail officials.

Contact information for Lane could not be located.

On two occasions, Swopes sold marijuana to undercover agents. A search warrant of the pair’s residence at 623 East Third Street in Melrose revealed marijuana packaged for distribution, numerous paraphernalia items and the components of a meth lab, the release said.

The arrests are tied to a search warrant served on the residence at 623 E. Third St. in October, court records show.
