Denish touring state

Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is touring New Mexico this week, answering questions from constituents inside a Department of Tourism bus.

A news release from her office reports she’ll be traveling more than 500 miles, visiting eight towns in three days.

“I’m looking forward to meeting as many people as possible” said Denish in the news release. “I’m traveling to not only listen to the concerns people may have, but also to hear their ideas on how we can better serve them.”

Here’s a list of local stops:

• Today: Fort Sumner High School, 1001 E. Sumner Ave., 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

• Today: Melrose Senior Center, 527 Main St., 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

• Wednesday: Clovis-Carver Public Library, 701 N. Main, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Wednesday: Portales City Memorial Building, 200 E. Seventh St., 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The New Mexico Racing Commission is expected to select a site for a new racetrack and casino in the next 30 to 60 days, according to Julian Luna, director of the NMRC.

Commissioners meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Tucumcari Convention Center to hear the last of three proposals.

Proponents in Raton and Santa Fe are competing against Tucumcari.

A new track typically takes 18 months to two years for construction, Luna said.
