Newman Project equips homes with safety measures

The Newman Project, which promotes safety for local seniors, helped to equip 20 homes in Curry and Roosevelt County this week.

The Newman Project was formed by District Attorney Matt Chandler to ensure the safety of the seniors in the community. The project was named in honor of Odis and Doris Newman, an elderly Portales couple that was kidnapped and killed in 2005.

The project is headed by the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, partnering with Lowe’s Heroes and volunteers, according to Jody Hanes of Lowe’s human resources department. Hanes said safety features installed include motion lights, peepholes, deadbolt locks on doors, fire extinguishers.

The District Attorney’s Office has said the project is ongoing.

To request a home safety inspection contact the office at 769-2246 in Clovis or 356-4434 in Portales. The property must be a single family home or a duplex, and the resident must be 60 years or older.
