Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
The Portales High School Class of 2008 — just before graduating Friday night — unveiled a time capsule Friday afternoon at R.M. James Elementary School that they buried in 2000, when they were all in third grade.
Not even a little water could dampened eight years of preserved memories buried about 2 feet down in front of the school. Letters students wrote were still visible as were photographs, cookbooks and other artifacts.
Among the recovered treasures were:
• A videotape containing interviews with students about what they want to be when they grow up.
• Class photos
• Newspaper clippings
• School programs
• A handout of Character Counts pillars
• A class cookbook students made
• A hockey puck
• A yo-yo
• Furbies
• A Saxon math handout
• Coins
• Rockets student made in science
• A hand drawing of the school
• Various plastic toys
Included amongst the papers were also letters that students in Patsy Neely’s class wrote, pledging to remain drug free and to finish school.
