A 63-year-old Melrose man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident about five miles east of Melrose on U.S. 60/84, according to Patrolman Lance Bateman of the New Mexico State Police.

Bill Bovell was driving west about 12:30 p.m. in a 1992 Mercury passenger car on a two-lane portion of the highway when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck the rear of a semi-tractor trailer traveling in the opposite direction, Bateman said.

Sgt. Andrew Tingwall of the New Mexico State Police said Bovell’s vehicle collided with the left rear axle of the trailer.

Bovell was pronounced dead at the accident scene, Bateman said

The driver of the semi, Rogelio Cruz, was not injured, Tingwall said.
