Where is our sheriff when needed?

I am a concerned citizen who lives in the Grady community. Our only local gas and diesel fuel pumps have recently been removed. This was due to the burglary of fuel and vandalizing of pumps several times starting in January and continuing through March.

The owner, Darrell Cook, had asked the Curry County Sheriff's Department for help in apprehending those responsible for the damage and theft, but he received little or no help at all.

Cook installed cameras and now has more evidence of who is responsible for this act of crime.

I speak for myself, but I thought I lived in a country where a crime of this kind should have been investigated to the fullness of the law. By this crime continuing over several months, it has caused the fuel pumps to be removed and resulted in a hardship on the people of the community. At the same time, Cook has lost thousands of dollars worth of fuel and equipment.

Recognition deserved

I would like to thank Renie Smith at Clovis High School for the efforts she expended in bringing the replica of the Vietnam memorial wall and the tribute to our fallen heroes of the current conflict.

Forty one years ago, I returned from my last tour in Vietnam. At that time the bottom of the gene pool was demonstration in Albuquerque.

I think it is remarkable that on the day the display was officially opened to the public here, the grandchildren of the bottom of the gene pool were demonstrating against the Iraq war in Albuquerque.

It was a proud but humbling experience to observe the reverence and dignity afforded to this display by the folks in our area. It sure is nice to live among patriotic, caring neighbors.
