Two local girls have come through three rounds of the Elks-sponsored Hoop Shoot free throw contest and are headed to the Dallas area this weekend for super-regional competition.
Niki Cordova, a 13-year-old student at Yucca Middle School, is competing in the girls age 12-13 division while 11-year-old Carrie Sharp, a student at Bella Vista Arts Academy, has advanced in the 10-11 age bracket. Both girls won city, district and regional competitions to get to this point, said Ann Sharp, Carrie’s mother.
District competition was at Artesia while the regional round was at Rio Rancho. Each contestant shoots 25 free throws, and the person who makes the most advances to the next level.
The super-regional, consisting of state winners in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, is scheduled for Saturday morning at Plano H.S. in suburban Dallas.
The winner advances to the national competition at Indianapolis in June. National champions are to receive a college scholarship worth $10,000.
