Clovis approves Sunday alcohol sales

CLOVIS — Clovis voters have approved Sunday alcohol sales in bars and restaurants.

Those sales would be limited to liquor by the glass — which opponents contended would increase alcohol-related incidents and send the message that it’s acceptable to drink and drive.

More than 55 percent of the 5,264 votes cast Tuesday favored Sunday sales.

The group behind the initiative, Citizens for Clovis Progress, said Sunday sales would increase revenue in Clovis because residents would eat out in the city instead of driving to other places where alcohol could be served with meals.

“I think this will bring a positive change for Clovis,” said Robin Howe, a spokesman for Citizens for Clovis Progress, which collected signatures for three months to put the question on the ballot.

The city already allows alcohol sales, both package and by the drink, on the other six days of the week.

City Attorney Dave Richards said it will take at least a month before Clovis restaurants and bars can serve alcohol on Sundays. The city commission has to declare the results of the election official, then businesses that wish to serve alcohol on Sundays will have to apply for a special license from the state.
