Rambelles too strong for ENMU women

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Freshman guard Camille Perkins scored 24 points, leading four Angelo State players in double figures in a 70-52 Lone Star Conference South Division women’s victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday night.

The win secured an eighth consecutive appearance in the LSC’s postseason tournament for the Rambelles (21-6, 8-4 South). Sophomore Tiffany Hardwell added 17 points for Angelo, while junior Nichelle Parks and sophomore Lindsey Leatherman each scored 10 points.

Hardwell went 6-of-10 from the field and grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds, while Leatherman struggled from the floor (1-for-10) but went 8-of-10 from the line and dished out six assists.

For the Zias, freshman forward Til-Lois Fifer scored 14 points off the bench while freshman guard Patricia Malouff added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

ENMU led for most of the first nine minutes, but the Rambelles dominated the latter part of the half and opened a 42-23 lead at the break. Angelo outscored the Zias 20-3 over the final 6 1/2 minutes to break open a two-point game.

Angelo State shot 51 percent in the first half and finished the night 24-for-30 from the free throw line, including 16-of-20 in the second half. On the other end, they held the Zias to 34 percent shooting (20-of-58) and forced ENMU into 27 turnovers.

The Zias never got closer than 13 in the final 20 minutes. Angelo’s largest lead was 22 points (70-48) in the final two minutes.
