State auditor announces special audit of Curry County fund

(Santa Fe, NM)- State Auditor Hector Balderas announced today that he will conduct a Special Audit of the Curry County Treasurer's Office focusing on the management of the Curry County Fair Motor Cross Fund. Discrepancies pertaining to the fund were brought to the Auditor's attention and he believes a Special Audit is warranted.

"I am committed to protecting New Mexican taxpayer dollars statewide — in our largest cities and our rural towns," Balderas said. "The Curry County Fair Motor Cross Fund provides additional revenue for the citizens of the county and every effort must be made to ensure fiscal accountability."

The Office of the State Auditor will review information regarding this case, examine the facts concerning the fund, and issue a Special Audit report. Auditor Balderas anticipates that the Special Audit will be concluded by March 2008.

"As your State Auditor, I will hold our government and elected officials to the highest standards of fiscal management. As stewards of the taxpayers money and trust, we have a special responsibility to guarantee that fraud, waste and abuse is not tolerated," Balderas concluded.
