Greyhound baseball sweeps Colorado School of Mines

Freedom New Mexico

GOLDEN, Colo. — Junior right-hander Ismael Solis pitched a two-hit shutout to lift Eastern New Mexico University past Colorado School of Mines 2-0 Saturday for a sweep of their baseball doubleheader.

In the first game, the Greyhounds’ top three hitters combined for 10 hits and 14 runs batted in as ENMU rolled to a 20-11 win over the Orediggers.

Solis allowed only three batters to reach in his shutout effort, walking none and striking out five. The Greyhounds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth against Mines’ Cory Ast on a one-out single by Clayton Young, a stolen base and senior Derrick Kennedy’s two-out RBI single to left.

ENMU, which stranded nine runners in the seven-inning contest, plated an insurance run in the sixth when freshman shortstop Kevin Thompson led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on Mitch Wolf’s sacrifice fly.

In the opener, leadoff man Jonathon Marbury and Young both went 3-for-6 with five RBIs, while No. 3 hitter Tyler Hayes was 4-for-6 and drove in four runs.

The Hounds (5-1) erased a 4-2 deficit with five runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by Marbury’s two-run, opposite-field double, and six more in the fifth, keyed by Hayes’ two-run single.

The Orediggers (0-2) chased starter Seth Clabaugh (1-1) with a six-run sixth to make it 13-10, but Young capped a five-run eighth with a two-run single to help put it out of reach.

The teams will complete the four-game series with another doubleheader today, set to begin at noon.
