Curry County Democrats to vote for presidential nominee

The Curry County Democrats submitted the following press release:

On Tuesday, February 5, New Mexicans will vote in the Democratic Presidential Preference Caucus to choose which candidate will represent the Democratic Party in the November general election. Voting will take place from noon to 7:00 p.m. at 184 sites across New Mexico.

The February 5 Caucus will be the only opportunity for registered Democrats to participate in choosing the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. Democratic primary contests for other elected offices will be held during the summer.

“The race for President is still undecided, and on February 5, New Mexicans will have a unique opportunity to decide who the next leader of our country will be,” Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairman Brian S. Colón said. “Our party has several incredible candidates, but there are important differences between them. The New Mexico Caucus is our chance to choose the best person for the job.”

With 184 locations in New Mexico, the Democratic Party has worked to make participation in the Caucus both easy and convenient. Voters will simply cast a ballot at the Caucus site and then leave, much like voting in a regular election.

To determine which Caucus site to attend, voters should visit http://www.nmdemocrats.org or call (505) 830-3650. The deadline for voting by mail has already passed. So in order to participate, voters must cast their vote at their Caucus location on February 5 between noon and 7 p.m.

Senator Hillary Clinton (New York) and Senator Barack Obama (Illinois) remain in the race. A clear winner has not yet emerged from the earlier contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. Twenty-one states will join New Mexico on that date, and the February 5 contests will likely determine the Democratic nominee. This will be one of the first times that New Mexico Democrats have had such an important role in the Presidential nominating process.

“With the national economy facing serious trouble, the war in Iraq continuing to keep our soldiers from the families, and so many Americans living without adequate health care, our next President must be ready to fix the mistakes of the last few years,” Colón said. “This Caucus is our chance to decide which of these candidates can set our country back on the right track.”

For more information on the Caucus, visit http://www.nmdemocrats.org or call (505) 830-3650. A list of Caucus locations in Clovis County is attached.
