Freezing rain, ice possible

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday for Curry, Roosevelt and De Baca counties.

Winter weather developing Wednesday will produce spotty areas of freezing rain and sleet mainly south and east of a line from Clovis to Ruidoso, with freezing rain expanding in coverage and intensity in the afternoon.

Freezing rain and sleet may glaze roads in spots, especially along U.S. 70, N.M. 285 and N.M. 380. Freezing rain may continue into the evening before tapering off overnight.

The unsettled weather is being ushered in by a storm moving east from the California coast toward the Great Basin.

Scattered mountain snow showers and valley rain were expected to develop over the south and west late Wednesday night, then spread north and east Thursday and Friday.

Snow could accumulate on higher terrain, mostly the southern San Juan Mountains in Rio Arriba County.

A more substantial surge of moisture will affect the state Saturday and Sunday as the storm over the Great Basin moves east across the southern Rocky Mountains.

Snow levels will fall as colder air moves into New Mexico.

The state should have drier weather beginning early next week.
