Dorothy Nelson says Rube Render is her choice for mayor of Clovis.

“He’s retired military, also retired from Lockheed Martin, has a master’s degree in human resources, and is just a genuinely nice guy … all qualities which would serve a mayor well,” she wrote in an e-mail.

“Rube seems truly interested in community affairs and demonstrates it by regularly attending city, county and school board meetings and making a contribution.”

The Clovis Fire Department responded to 539 calls for service in December, according to statistics released this week by Chief Ray Westerman.

Firefighters received 6,182 calls for service in 2007, or about 515 per month.

The department also performed 96 business inspections last month, issuing 232 reports for non-compliance.
