DENVER — Metro State’s pressure defense harassed Eastern New Mexico University’s women into 30 turnovers Friday and the Roadrunners posted a 70-61 win over the Zias in Metro’s Thanksgiving Classic.
Senior guard Ashley Mickens scored 21 points and junior forward Cassondra Bratton added 15 at Metro State (2-1) overcame an early 14-6 deficit with a 13-0 run, then pulled away in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Freshman guard Tori Northcutt and freshman forward Til-Lois Fifer scored 14 points each for the Zias (1-3). Northcutt also had five assists before fouling out late in the game.
The Zias stayed in the game by hitting 20-of-25 free throws. ENMU trailed 6-0 early before running off 14 consecutive points, highlighted by 3-pointers f rom Northcutt and freshman Cat Clay.
The Zias face Colorado State-Pueblo at 1 p.m. today. The ThunderWolves improved to 3-0 for just the second time in the program’s history in Friday’s opener with a 61-49 win over St. Edward’s.
