Regis tops Hounds

DENVER — Regis University shot 61 percent from the floor, including 75 percent after halftime, and the Rangers rolled to a 96-71 victory over Eastern New Mexico University’s men on Saturday night.

Senior forward Jeremey Gibson posted career highs with 39 points and 15 rebounds for the Rangers (2-0), who opened their season on Friday night with a 65-58 victory over Hawaii-Hilo. Gibson blistered the nets with 18-of-21 field goal shooting, helping him overcome a 3-for-9 night from the free throw line.

Junior guard Andy Pokorny added 16 points, going 4-for-4 from 3-point ranger. Regis hit 36-of-59 shots from the field, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Justin Redman-Trotter led the Greyhounds with 22 points, including 10-of-11 from the free throw line, but the Greyhounds (2-3) committed 19 turnovers while collecting only eight assists. Senior guard Kendall Davis, playing for the first time in three games, added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and junior guard Chad Johnson scored 10 points.

Eastern led only briefly early in the game. The Rangers took the lead for good on Gibson’s dunk with 15:38 left in the half, making it 8-6.

Redman-Trotter’s 3-pointer pulled the Hounds to 21-16 with 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the half before the Rangers took complete control with a 16-4 run. They led 45-31 at the half.

Regis built its advantage to 20 points with under 13 minutes left. The Hounds got as close as 10 with just over seven minutes left, but they were outscored 22-7 the rest of the way.

Junior guard Gabriel Green scored only three points but had 11 of Regis’ 23 assists. Another junior guard, Aaron Sutton, also reached double figures for the Rangers off the bench with 11 points.

The Hounds return to action on Wednesday, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State in a 7 p.m. tipoff at Greyhound Arena.
