Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Canned food sought

Volunteers with the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico will be out Saturday in Portales and Clovis collecting canned food and non-perishable items.

Another drive will be held within the schools that will also help stock the food bank, said executive director Nancy Taylor.

“This (Saturday’s) is the one that means so very much to us. It will keep us running until the Mother’s Day canned food drive,” Taylor said.

Those wishing to donate are asked to place their donations curbside so that the volunteers can pick them up, Taylor said.

Volunteers will be out from 9 a.m. to noon for collections.

In the past, the drive has been held in Clovis. This year the food drive has branched out to Portales.

“It keeps us able to serve our agencies through the cold winter months and gives our food pantry people the support to carry out their work,” Taylor said of the canned food drive.

Rising costs of fuel and an energy crunch has Taylor concerned that demand for food will increase, she said.

“It’s a good organization and they do a lot of good work,” said board member Glen O’Rear. “It’s really amazing what they do.”

O’Rear will be one of the many volunteers out on Saturday in Portales helping to collect donations for the canned food drive. All efforts

will be used in order to collect donations for the food bank, he said.

“If somebody has donations, we will do what we can to collect it,” O’Rear said.
