Oct. 7 Club Notes

Delta Kappa Gamma

Delta Kappa Gamma met Sept. 24 at 21st Street Church of Christ for their first meeting of the year.

Dianne Davis, president, opened the meeting with the collect. Kristin Stata, secretary, called the roll and read the minutes of the last spring meeting. Anna Kolek gave the treasurer’s report.

Davis, Patsy Camp and Roberta Johnson attended the meeting of Phi in Portales to meet the state president, Natalie Gartman of Hobbs.

Dues have been raised at the state and national level. To offset this, the chapter voted to increase dues to $65 for the coming year, so the aid and grant can continue. The group voted not to sell magazine subscriptions.

Two members, Jeannie Eichenberger and Elizabeth James, have moved to Canyon, Texas.

The next meeting will be Oct. 22. The program will be presented by Connie Moyers in Portales.

Yearbooks will be passed out at the next meeting.

Chaparral Extension Club

The Chaparral Extension Club met Sept. 27 in the home of Valeria Jordan with Jean Skaggs helping as hostess.

There were 10 members and two guests, Linda Brown and Selma Hines, present. Jordan read “If I were the Devil,” Carol Litzelman read “Tea Bag” and June Phillips gave a reading about a dog.

Sheryl Abdill conducted the business meeting. Roll call was answered with what members did over the summer. Linda Roberts read the minutes and correspondence. Dorothy Bean gave the treasurer’s report.

Connie Moyer will present a fall showcase Oct. 22-23 in Portales.

German Fest leader training will be Oct. 18 and the Christmas showcase will be Nov. 9-10. Both of the showcases will be presented by Glenda Belcher in Clovis.

Curry County Extension Council

The Curry County Extension Council met Oct. 1 at the extension office with 20 members present.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Amy Armenta read “Husband and Wives” and “The Silent Treatment.”

Martha Brister read the minutes. Treasurer Judy Gambil reported that there are 146 members. Linda Roberts announced the German Fest leader training will be Oct. 18 and “A Christmas for Everyone” will be Nov. 9-10. Election of officers was held with Sheryl Abdill elected president, Helen Casaus as treasurer and Jewell Hill as reporter.

The theme of the annual banquet on Nov. 15 will be “Apron Past and Present.”

Cleaning of the extension building was discussed. Members were invited to the EANM meeting in Portales Oct. 24-26.

Abdill reported on the town hall meeting in Roswell and the High Plains Quilt Festival. The next council meeting will be Jan. 7. For information contact the extension office at 763-6505 or 762-0296.

Curry County Association of Educational Employees

The Curry County Association of Educational Employees held a luncheon at the Mabry Inn for their October meeting. Halloween decorations were arranged by Pam Sury. Lynda Milburn led the pledge to the flag and introduced the speaker, Brad Slater, quality assurance manager for Southwest Cheese.

Slater discussed the manufacturing process of making cheese and described the machinery involved. Southwest Cheese makes cheddar, colby jack, Monterey jack and pepper jack cheese which is compressed into 40 and 640 pound blocks and shipped to plants all over the country for packaging.

Richard Sullinger gave a report from the membership committee and Delman Shirley gave the Legislative report. Shirley stated the 2008 Legislative session will be critical, as the controversial health care proposal will be introduced. He asked for volunteers to assist the Legislative committee.

The state conventions of NMAER this month will be attended by Lynda and George Milburn, Mary and Dick Sullinger, Pam Sury, Margaret Hendrickson and Billie Johnson.
