Education Digest: Eastern enrollment increases slightly

The 2007 fall enrollment at Eastern New Mexico University is up slightly from 2006, according to a university press release.

The university reported 4,180 students enrolled, an increase of 44 students.

Graduate enrollment is down, officials reported

ENMU President Steven Gamble said he was pleased with the numbers “considering the temporary reduction in personnel at Cannon Air Force Base during their transition to a new mission” and a low unemployment rate in the area, which causes potential students to enter the job market.

Semester credit hours are down slightly from last year’s 44,710 to this year’s 44,522.

Teachers capture PNM Fund grants

Two Clovis teachers were awarded PNM Fund grants in recognition of innovative teaching ideas, according to a press release from the energy company.

Marla Layman of Clovis High was awarded $1,662 for “Video Booktalk Kiosk” and Brian Wargel of Marshall Middle School was awarded $1,000 for “I Compose ... I Comprehend.”

PNM awarded $200,000 in grants to 89 teachers statewide.

Teachers may submit project ideas for consideration by March 5.

Student attending D.C. conference

Marshall Middle School seventh-grader Andre Dionte Pollard was invited to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

He was nominated by his teacher at Cameo Elementary, Curtis Long. He is signed up to attend the conference in November

The conference is for sixth- and seven-graders who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and leadership potential, according to Junior National Young Leaders Conference material.

He is the son of Andre Pollard.
