Employment fair planned at Eastern

Members of the Community Development Corporation Board, in conjunction with Eastern New Mexico University, will hold an employment fair to seek students interested in filling area positions.

“The whole intent is to find part-time employees,” said Sharon King, interim director of the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation.

The fair will take place Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Zia Room, located in the Campus Union Building, on the ENMU campus.

There are 13 employers signed up, ranging from restaurants to Western Dairy Transport, King said.

According to RCCDC board president Randy Knudson, the employment fair is designed to allow an opportunity for local business to recruit students from both ENMU and the local high schools.

“We’re interested in helping ENMU retain students by retaining employment, and (help) the businesses too,” Knudson said.

The employment fair was developed from a suggestion by David Shelton, president/CEO of Western Dairy Transport. In Stepehenville, Texas, where a WDT plant is located, Shelton uses students from the local university to help fill the plant’s employment needs, Knudson said.

Through the RCCDC board, Knudson is hoping to foster more of a working relationship with the university, community and county to retain jobs for those who are interested in finding employment, he said.

“We want to foster economic development, not only in Portales, but in Roosevelt County,” Knudson said.
