Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega Jr. has been named to the board of directors of Western Bank of Clovis and Portales, according to a Western Bank news release.
“I am very excited to be a part of Western Bank, an institution that cares about the success of its customers,” said Ortega, who also serves as director of operations at KENW-TV, the public television station in Portales.
NMSU Peanut Day set for Wednesday
New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Science Center at Clovis will hold its annual Peanut Field Day from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. at Curry County Fertilizer, about four miles south of Clovis on U.S. 70.
Attendees will visit a field owned by local grower Dee Brown to learn about the most recent research efforts with peanuts conducted by NMSU and Texas Tech University faculty. The farm is located on RR2N in Roosevelt County.
After lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to visit the main research station of the Agricultural Science Center at Clovis.

Western Bank plans new branch
Western Bank of Clovis and Portales will break ground soon for a new building in Portales, according to a bank news release.
The new bank will be located on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Brazos Street, the release reads. It will offer full-service banking including drive-through tellers.
Additional details were not available, according to a bank spokesperson.
Western Bank of Clovis was established in 1975 as a full-service community bank. The Portales office at 203 S. Main Ave. began operations in 1995.
Tax seminar being held in Lubbock
The Internal Revenue Service will hold a seminar to help tax professionals incorporate electronic filing, e-Pay and e-Service options into their tax practice, according to an IRS press release.
Workshops will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (CDT) Sept. 18-19 at Mahon Library in Lubbock.
The Sept. 18 workshop is for new Electronic Return Originators who have not filed electronically in the past and are interested in doing so in the future.
The Sept. 19 workshop will be refresher training to include updates and changes for tax professionals already filing taxes electronically.

VistaCare earns service award
The Clovis branch of VistaCare, a hospice care facility, received the Public Service Award from the New Mexico Department of Aging and Long-Term Services, according to a department news release.
The award was presented to VistaCare’s Clovis executive director, Gary Logsdon, at the department’s annual New Mexico Conference on Aging.
The Public Service Award is given in recognition of a business or organization’s contribution in the service of seniors, the release reads.
VistaCare is a national provider of hospice services with programs in 14 states.
