Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ARTESIA — Las Vegas Robertson beat Clovis 1-0 in shootout in a girls soccer during a first-round game Friday in the Artesia Tournament.
The Lady Wildcats held a lopsided 21-6 edge in shots on goal in its first game of the season, but were unable to find the net in regulation play and two 10-minute overtimes. Robertson beat Clovis 4-1 in the shootout.
“We had our opportunities,” Clovis coach Shane Leatherwood said. “We just weren’t able to convert.
We made some really good passes, but we were rushing out shots.”
Leatherwood said his team were frustrated by the Cardinals’ physical play and panicked a little as the game wore on.
Katherine Cordova and Chelsi Eldridge combined for three saves for the Lady Cats.
Jasiman Dykes led Clovis with nine shots on goal.
Leatherwood said Cynthia Madrid has Clovis’ best scoring chance came in the second overtime. However, the Robertson goalie made a great save on her shot from 25 yards out.
Clovis plays the winner of a match between Carlsbad and Deming today.
