Area prepares for upcoming school year

Area schools will soon be filled with students as officials prepare for the start of the upcoming school year. As August approaches several activities will take place in preparation of the new school year.

La Casa Family Health Centers will be offering backpacks filled with school supplies to area students. Children who come in for a Well Child check or a physical qualify to receive the backpacks filled with supplies.The cost of the exams will be $20. After the exams the children will receive a voucher that will be redeemable for a backpack full of supplies, said Carmen Pacheco, director of operations.

“We’re hoping to meet and fill the needs of the community,” Pacheco said.

On Aug. 11, La Casa will be hosting a celebration that will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be during this event that the vouchers may be redeemed for the backpacks and supplies. Also during the celebration, will be a car seat safety check, bike safety instruction, kids games and shots for tots. Free food and prizes donated by local merchants will also be given away. New this year will be a 5K Run/Walk, said Pacheco.

“We just really want to promote health and get people to participate,” Pacheco said.

Portales Municipal Schools

New Student Registration: 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 2-13.

New students to the district will need to bring the following to registration: Birth certificate, immunization records, latest report cards and Social Security number (if applicable).

• Open house for students in grades 1-12 will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 13.

• School will begin on Aug.14 for grades 1-12.

• Kindergarten classes will begin on Aug. 20.

• Pre-school classes will begin on Aug. 28.

• Brown kindergarten will have scheduled meetings with parents from Aug. 15-17.

• Junior High schedules may be picked up from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 13.

Portales High School Schedule Pick Up Times

Seniors: Aug. 6 — 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Juniors: Aug. 6 — 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Sophomores: Aug. 7 — 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Freshman: Aug. 7 — 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
