CHS GOLF: Clovis teams in middle of pack

ROSWELL — Clovis High’s golf teams were lodged in the middle of the pack after Monday’s first round of the two-day Roswell Invitational golf tournament.

Clovis shot 332 and was tied with Deming for ninth in a field of 20 boys teams who played at New Mexico Military Golf Course. The CHS girls stood ninth out of 12 teams at 432 in action at Spring River G.C.

The boys and girls will swap courses for today’s final round.

Led by sophomore Kyle Boatman’s 84, Clovis Christian’s boys shot 384 and were 20th after the first days, two stroke behind Taos. CCS had two entries in girls competition, with sophomore Lauren Douma earning a leg toward Class 1A state competition with a round of 94.

Sophomore Tyler Fontenot led the CHS boys with a round of 78 and earned his third leg toward the Class 5A state tournament, qualifying him for that event. Alamogordo leads the tournament at 309, five shots up on Artesia.

“Everybody got off to a bad start and nobody could really get anything going, except for Tyler,” Wildcats coach Cal Fullerton said. “The good thing is the kids were disappointed in themselves, and know they can do better.”

Senior Amanda Estes also earned her third leg for the Lady Wildcats, shooting a 94. Senior Tiffany Reid got her second leg at 95.

Senior Marissa Lansford stayed home on Monday with a stomach virus, but Lady Cats coach Cristy Hill said she thinks Lansford will be able to make it for today’s competition.
