* Panhandle dominated the third quarter, breaking open a one-point game, and the Pantherettes went on to eliminate Muleshoe 59-43 in a bi-district playoff game played on Monday night at the West Texas A&M Event Center in Canyon.
The Lady Mules (17-13) trailed the entire game, but pulled to within 27-26 at halftime. Panhandle (22-7) then posted a 16-6 scoring edge in the third quarter to turn the game into a runaway.
Kara Lewis and Amanda George scored 14 points each for Panhandle, while Kara Looten added 10. The Pantherettes move on to an area round game against Slaton next week at a site and on a date to be determined.
Muleshoe’s high scorers were Kyra Kimbrough with 14 points and Kate Lepard with 12.

*In a playoff game for second place in District 5-1A, Olton held Bovina to 20 points through three quarters and handed the Mustangs a 52-43 setback. The game was played on a neutral court in Sudan.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs (12-11) will continue on in the Class 1A playoffs, facing Gruver in a game set for either 7 or 8 p.m. (CST) on Feb. 22. That game will also be played at the WT Event Center, Bovina coach Willie Torres said.
Meantime, Olton’s first-round game is against Vega on either Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
Both teams struggled a bit in the first half, but Olton managed to open a 19-10 lead at the break. That margin was 34-20 after three stanzas before the Mustangs mounted a belated comeback.
Senior guard Jeremy Vazquez scored a career-high 22 points for Bovina, while junior post Ivan Solis added 11. But only four Mustangs scored.
“”We didn’t shoot the ball very good,” Torres said. “We missed a lot of layups early.
“We just could never catch any momentum on offense.”
Bovina will play Whitharral in a practice game set for 3:30 p.m. (CST) Saturday at Canyon Randall.
