Hounds finish series sweep of Sul Ross

ALPINE, Texas — Clayton Young went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs and sophomore left-hander Seth Clabaugh earned his first collegiate win Saturday as Eastern New Mexico University rolled over Sul Ross State 9-1 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader.

The Greyhounds then completed a sweep of the season-opening four-game set by pounding out 18 hits for a 17-3 rout in the second game.

Clabaugh, son of ENMU coach Phil Clabaugh, went 0-5 last season even though he pitched well enough to win at times. Against the Lobos, he allowed two hits over five innings with three walks and four strikeouts.

Young had an RBI infield hit in the second, doubled and scored in the fourth, added a two-run triple in the fifth and singled home a run in the seventh.

Sophomore Tyler Doughty completed the two-hit pitching effort, working the final two innings.

In the nightcap, Troy Vaughan went 4-for-6 and Matthew Chavez, Sean Cruce and Daniel Martinez were all 3-for-4 as the Hounds made short work of Sul Ross.

ENMU erased a 1-0 deficit in the second, scoring three times after the first two hitters were retired as Martinez hit an RBI single and Cruce delivered a two-run single.

Sophomore Evan Orsak relieved starter Josh Stephenson in the fourth and pitched out of trouble, keeping the Hounds in front 3-2. ENMU then scored four in the fifth and added seven in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double by Chavez.
