New charter school guidelines passed
New guidelines for establishing charter schools in New Mexico were passed with Senate Bill 600, according to a New Mexico Public Education Department press release.
Effective July 1, 2007, charter schools may elect to be authorized by the school district in which they are to be located or the Public Education Commission.
All applications for new charter schools must be filed by July 1 to be considered for operation in the 2008 fiscal year, the release reads. Applicants must inform the school district and Commission of their intent to apply for a charter at least 180 days prior to the application deadline, according to the release.
