Muleshoe man wins truck roadeo

JAVIER CRUZ OF Muleshoe won the Texas Department of Transportation’s annual Truck Roadeo for the Lubbock district in September.

SINCE 1988, the TxDOT has held an annual Truck Roadeo, where employees weave through obstacle courses in single-axle trucks, squeeze through narrow spaces, and inspect vehicles for defects.

“IT NOT ONLY SHARPENS their skills, but promotes safety,” TxDOT Public Information Officer Dianah Ascencio said.

A MAINTENANCE technician, Cruz has been with the department in Muleshoe since 1999 and has participated in the Roadeo the previous six years, according to a Lubbock TxDOT press release.

THE FIRST PLACE district win garnered Cruz a $750 prize and the chance to compete in the state Roadeo.

CRUZ PLACED 30th among 50 drivers from 25 TxDOT districts in the state-wide competition.
