Lady Rams get slow start in state pool play

ALBUQUERQUE — The Portales Lady Rams finished sixth in Pool A on Wednesday in the Class 3A state volleyball tournament at Tingley Coliseum with a 3-7 record in games.

The Lady Rams will play a first-round bracket match at 9:45 a.m. today against Laguna-Acoma, which finished third in Pool B.

Portales (14-6) split its first three two-game matches with Hope Christian (15-13, 13-15), Sandia Prep (15-8, 13-15) and Crownpoint (9-15, 15-12) before losing to West Las Vegas (9-15, 11-15) and Hot Springs (13-15, 6-15).

The latter result gave Hot Springs the tiebreaker for fifth place over Portales with a 3-7 game record for the day.

West Las Vegas (8-2) and second-place Hope Christian (7-3) earned first-round byes from the pool in today’s bracket play, as did Pool B champion Pojoaque (10-0) and runnerup Ruidoso (6-4).

Crownpoint was third in Pool A at 5-5, followed by Sandia Prep (4-6), Hot Springs and Portales. Behind the leaders in Pool B were Laguna-Acoma (6-4), Hatch Valley (5-5), Bloomfield (2-8) and Wingate (1-9).

Winners of this morning’s matches advance to meet the top four seeds in quarterfinal clashes set for 5 and 6:45 p.m. today. Semifinals are on Friday, with the championship match scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
