WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State limited Eastern New Mexico University to just two shots on goal Thursday night and the top-seeded host Mustangs notched a 5-1 victory in the semifinals of the Southwest Soccer Conference tournament.
Goals by Scott Leonard and Brandon Swartzendruber midway through the first half staked Midwestern (16-2-1), ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II, to a 2-0 halftime lead. Then the teams erupted for three goals in a span of less than two minutes early in the second half.
Midwestern’s Sun Porter scored off a corner kick with just under 37 minutes left, making it 3-0, before junior defender Adam Diehl put the Greyhounds (4-11-3) on the board 49 seconds later with an unassisted goal. It was only the second goal given up by the Mustangs in their last eight games, and ENMU’s first against them in three meetings this season.
Daniel Brown followed with an unassisted goal at the 54:50 mark. Jake Landon’s goal with about 18 minutes to play sealed the outcome.
Midwestern will play third-seeded West Texas A&M in Saturday’s 11 a.m. (MDT) championship match. The Buffaloes went to penalty kicks to post a 3-2 victory over second-seeded Northeastern State in Thursday’s first semifinal.
