CHS VOLLEYBALL; Lady Cats go five games to win district opener

HOBBS — The Clovis Lady Wildcats opened their District 4-5A volleyball schedule on Thursday night with a 25-15, 15-25, 25-12, 21-25, 15-9 victory over Hobbs.

Clovis (9-8, 1-0 district) had four leaders in each statistical category. Senior hitter Siobhan Flatow had 10 kills, while senior setter Britni Montague provided 32 assists. Senior libero Cynthia Lucio also added 8 digs, and junior middle hitter Jasmine McDonald earned seven blocks.

The Lady Cats were there own worst enemies, Clovis coach Darrell Ray said, noting that too many mental mistakes let Hobbs (8-9, 0-1) linger for five games.

“We prevailed because we’re stronger physically,” Ray said. “We played just good enough to come up with a ‘W.’”

The match went back and forth throughout the night, with neither team able to gain momentum to put the other away.
