City officials said despite more than 5 inches of rain in the last month, the newly constructed storm drainage project on Prince Street remains untested.
The city-funded project, which stretched from the corner of 21st Street to Ace Triangle Hardware, was needed to alleviate water pooling along the street after heavy rainfall.
However, Clovis Public Works Director Harry Wang said the recent rainfall has not been heavy enough to judge the success of the project.
“The rain we got was steady,” Wang said, “but it didn’t accumulate.”
Clovis City Manager Joe Thomas said Prince Street flooded after heavy rains prior to the project.
“The recent rains did not generate enough run-off to judge if the project was a success,” Thomas said, “but it will be an improvement.”
With the storm drainage improvement project complete, the state is scheduled to begin pavement preservation work on Prince Street from Commerce Way to Llano Estacado.
Thomas said the construction is scheduled to begin this week and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Mill and inlay work to prolong the life of the four-lane road will be done from 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. to reduce the impact on travelers, according to a state Department of Transportation press release.
NMDOT officials said there will be temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits during construction.
