Altrusa

Altrusa International of Clovis members met at Muffley’s Back Door for their monthly program. A salad supper was served.

New officers were installed: Phyllis Davidson, president; Nancy Taylor, vice president; Jennifer Gomez, recording secretary; Beverly Fitz, corresponding secretary; Glenda Hileman, treasurer; and JoAnn Winslow, Mary Weigl and Amber Folk, directors. Carolyn Muffley conducted the installation.

Beverly Fitz was chosen as the Altrusan of the Year for her years of solid dedication to Altrusa.

Two visitors were welcomed: Amanda Ashford and Mary Knowles.

Five members of Altrusa International of Clovis recently attended the District Ten Conference in Roswell: Kathy Travis, Joanne Winslow, Nancy Taylor, Mary Weigl and Phyllis Davidson.

The District Ten Conference provides officer training, workshops and networking for Altrusa members.

District Ten encompasses New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming with 17 clubs and active members.

Altrusa, June 27

Members of Altrusa International of Clovis met June 27 at Muffley’s Back Door for their regular monthly business meeting.

The annual goals were reviewed. A new Web site was discussed.

Joanne Winslow will design a Web site and report at the next meeting.

The club adopted a Mexican orphanage and will support it with school supplies.

Two new members were classified and will be initiated at Monday’s meeting. They are Mary Knowles and Amanda Ashford.

The yearbook was distributed to those present and the annual budget was reviewed. Altrusa of Clovis will host the District Ten Conference in 2008.

Sylvia Bean reported that 53 “In the Beginning” baskets have been delivered.

The next meeting will be a salad supper in the back yard of Lyn Henderson. This is the club’s annual membership drive meeting.

Altrusa honored

Altrusa International of Clovis is honored to receive a $500 grant from the International Foundation, according to Phyllis Davidson, club president.

The grant will be used to fund the “In The Beginning” Baby Education Basket Project, according to Davidson. The program provides first-time mothers with a basket of literacy objects that include a Baby Einstein CD, music CD, book, small stuffed toy and an application for a library card for mothers to have a variety of reading material for their babies, Davidson said.

According to Davidson, grants of $250 to $1,000 are available through sponsoring Altrusa Clubs from the Altrusa International Foundation to improve the economic well-being and quality of life through its commitment to community services and literacy.

Established as a charitable corporation in 1962, the foundation is committed to the service goals and objectives of Altrusa International.

Funding is provided by voluntary contributions from members, Altrusa Clubs and the general public.

Rebekah Lodge

Friendship Rebekah Lodge held its meeting June 27 at the IOOF Hall.

The hostess was Wanda Scott. The subject was Father’s Day.

Secretary Evelyn Calder read a note from Ellen Whited, New York past president. She will be coming to the New Mexico assembly in Las Cruses in September. She was a member of the Friendship Lodge while her husband, Ed, was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base.

A committee of Mary Dorris, Evelyn Calder and Vicky Howard was appointed to revise the by-laws of the lodge.

Semiannual reports will be read at the next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the IOOF Hall, 405 Main St., which will be hosted by Serena and Melvin Goar. The subject will be Independence Day.

CCFRW

The Curry County Federated Republican Women met June 13.

President Carolyn Shipley opened with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. New member Donna Chandler was introduced. Duane Castleberry was congratulated for his primary election victory and his opponent, Diane Mains, was congratulated for an excellent and clean primary race.

A tribute was given to Dorothy Nelson, club secretary, for her campaign to encourage Americans to show gratitude to American troops by wearing red shirts every Friday. She is the eastern New Mexico representative for the American Cancer Society and organizes Relay For Life events. She encourages optimism and combats negativity in all aspects of her activities.

Plans for the fair booth were discussed, and members will be asked to sign up for staffing the booth at the next CCFRW meeting Tuesday.
