“J.K.” Barfield III, 66, of Texico died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at his home following an illness.
He was born March 18, 1940, to James Knox Barfield II and the former Thelma Donna Burleson in Stanton, Texas, where he attended grade school. He attended middle school in Clovis and graduated from Fort Sumner High School. He attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He married Sherry Cortese on March 20, 1959, in Fort Sumner.
He worked for PNM for 27 years. He was a member of the Fort Sumner Lion’s Club and Wild Turkey Federation.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jarrod Barfield; his parents; and three sisters, Dorothy Jean Barfield, Mary Catherine Bristow and Glen Alene Hromas.
Survivors include his wife, of Texico; a son, James Knox Barfield IV (and wife, Lori) of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a daughter, Christi Arlene Edwards (Joel) of Texico; a sister, Lou Ann Cortese (Gerald Don) of Fort Sumner; six grandchildren, James Knox Barfield V, Adam Barfield, Sean Heaton, Ashlee Heaton, Crystal Edwards and Jenny Edwards; one great-granddaughter, Mariya Hogg; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The Rev. Jim Peabody and the Rev. Coy Brewer will officiate. Burial will follow services in the family plot at Fort Sumner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.
Pallbearers will be Knox, Mikey and Joe Don Cortese, Brent, Darin and Eddie Ratliff, Wes Gant and Johnny Odegaard. Honorary pallbearers will be Luke and Aaron Cortese, Howard Miller, Neil Kron, Jack Achen, Adam and Jack Barfield, Sean Heaton, and Jeff and Rodney Hromas.
