Curry County fair secretary resigns

Curry County Fair secretary Peggy Burns has resigned effectively immediately, the fair board’s president announced at Tuesday’s regular Curry County Commission meeting.

Burns had been employed by the fair board for eight years.

Curry County Fair Board President Kerry Crist declined to comment on the reason Burns resigned. Attempts to reach Burns by the Clovis News Journal were unsuccessful.

“Obviously when you lose someone with that much experience it’s a setback,” Crist said, “but we (fair board) just want to move forward and continue with the tradition of putting on a good (Curry County) fair.”

Curry County Manager Dick Smith said county administration plans to create a fairgrounds manager position. The individual will be a county employee and will oversee all aspects of the fair, he said.

Other agenda items discussed:

• County Treasurer Rhonda Bookout reported her department is preparing to mail 4,000 delinquent notices to residents who have failed to pay their property taxes.

• Curry County Adult Detention Center administrator Leslie Johnson reported 236 adult inmates and 21 juveniles were being held by the county.

• Commissioners voted unanimously to change the July 4 meeting to July 6.

• Curry County Sheriff Roger Hatcher reported 16 city arrests and 42 county arrests were made in May.

• Commissioners approved 40 indigent applications totaling $90,980.
