CNJ editor, reporter receive news award

Clovis News Journal reporter Marlena Hartz and Editor David Stevens received a first-place citation for spot news reporting in the 2006 Best of the West awards announced last week.

Best of the West honors the top work by newspapers and television stations in 13 western states, according to an organization news release.

Hartz and Stevens were honored for their reports about a Marshall Junior High student whose homemade burrito was mistaken for a rifle last year. The school was shut down and police snipers stationed around the building before the mistake was realized.

Second place in the spot news contest went to reporters from The Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City, while third place went to reporters from The News Tribune in Tacoma, Wash.

Bindweed field day set for Wednesday

Farmers are invited to attend a free bindweed demonstration field day from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at the New Mexico State University demonstration plot three miles east of Broadview. The plot is at the corner of N.M. 241 and Curry Road H. The workshop is sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service of New Mexico State University.

According to Stan Jones, county extension agent, attendees will be updated on results of the three-year study to control bindweed with chemical treatment.

Jones said farmers will receive three continuing education units for attending.

Administrator named for Retirement Ranch

Drew Potter has been named the administrator for Retirement Ranch on Dillon Street. He succeeds Marv Schultz, who has retired after nearly eight years as the nursing home’s administrator.

Potter is a Clovis native and graduate of Clovis High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla. He had been the administrator at Bender Terrace long-term care facility in Lubbock.

Potter, his wife, Kimberly, and their three daughters are relocating to Clovis.

Schultz, of Clovis, becomes owners representative for Prairie Meadows, the new residential care facility to be built adjacent to Retirement Ranch. He has more than 16 years’ experience as a licensed nursing home administrator in Oregon, Montana and New Mexico, and 20 years’ experience as a hospital administrator. He will coordinate activities for the new facility, including construction, licensing and financing.
