Elida completes perfect district run

ELIDA — Tom Sullivan went 5-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs Monday, and the Elida Tigers completed a perfect run through District 6-1A baseball on Monday with a 17-7 victory over Dora.

The Tigers (8-4, 4-0 district) have a non-district game remaining against defending Class 1A state champion Texico in Clovis on May 4 before beginning play in the state tournament in Los Lunas on May 10. The championship game is scheduled two days later at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

Meantime, the Coyotes finished in a tie for second in the district with Floyd at 1-3. Those teams will have a coin flip to determine who will host a one-game playoff, probably on Thursday.

Sullivan hit a two-run homer in the second and a three-run shot in the third before driving in the final run with a fifth-inning single, ending the game on the 10-run rule. He also had a double and another single.

Caleb Widner went four innings and struck out four for the win while Trenton Chenault struck out two in one inning. Thomas West added 3-for-5 for the Tigers, who collected 14 hits, while Widner and Chenault each picked up two hits.

Shawn Quick and Kristian King each had two of the Coyotes’ seven hits.

Golf — Two Dora boys and one Elida girl participated on Monday in an invitational golf tournament at Artesia.

Elida’s Lindsey Ward posted a round of 46-49 — 95 in the girls tourney, while Kyler Smith shot 93 and Clay Smith 96 for Dora’s boys.
