Hogg, John

John B. Hogg, 91, of Portales, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, in Farwell.

He was born Sept. 24, 1914, to John B. Hogg Sr. and Roxie Lee Hale Hogg at the family farm home at Jonesville, Quay County. On Oct. 28, 1949, he married LaVelle Cox Mitchell in Clovis.

His father died when he was 2, leaving his mother to raise “little JB” along with his 10-year-old sister and 12-year-old brother. He attended Grady schools until he and his mother moved to Las Vegas, N.M., where he attended secondary school. They later moved to Sante Fe. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and then for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.

After serving in the Army during World War II in the European and Pacific Theaters, he returned to the SCS as a civil engineering technician in Roosevelt County. He retired with 30 years service and became a real estate broker in Portales. In the fall of 2005, he was honored as a “hero” in the struggle for social justice in Roosevelt County in the 1970s.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 10, 2006, his parents, brother James Hogg, sister Jensie Clara Hogg Howell, and two infant brothers.

He is survived by a son, Ronald Lloyd Mitchell (and wife, Kathie) of Mesa, Ariz.; daughters Lois Sharon Mitchell Simnacher (Darwin) of Clovis, and Carolyn Jane Hogg Kernberger (Richard Epstein) of Socorro; six grandchildren, Michelle Angelique Simnacher (partner Donna Read) of Broomfield, Colo., Karrie Denise Mitchell (partner Corey Seemiller) of Tucson, Ariz., Reuben Jayseph Sittler and Kragen Javier Sitaker (Beatrice Murch), all of San Francisco, Ryan Scott Mitchell of Mesa, Ariz., and Serafina Monica Kernberger of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
