Gladys Elizabeth Scott, 88, of Roswell, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at her home.

Born Nov. 25, 1917, in Elyria, Ohio, to Mary and Frank Detwiler, she graduated from Elyria Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1938 and began a nursing career that lasted until her 83rd birthday. She worked in hospitals in Elyria, Ohio, New Jersey and Los Angeles. She enlisted during World War II and was assigned to the 12th Field Army Hospital. Stationed at Brownwood, Texas, at Camp Bowie, she met Capt. Thomas Scott whom she married on Nov. 2, 1945. They served together in Great Britain, Belgium, France and Germany. In 1949 they moved to a farm in Portales. In 1958, she began full-time nursing at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales, where she was one of only two registered nurses in the hospital. For the last few years of her career, she worked for Presbyterian Home Health Services as a home health nurse and chart reviewer. She was a member of Central Christian Church in Portales for many years. She moved to Roswell to be close to her daughter in 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Evan and Roland Detwiler, and by her husband, who died Jan. 30, 2005.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane (and husband, Jack Batson) of Roswell; her granddaughter, Shannon Batson of Portales and John Batson (Karen) of Temple, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Mortuary.

Kenneth Broad will officiate services. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Pallbearers will be Smokey Ball, Bob Matheny, Joe Kelting, Dave Collins, George Peterson and Sam Rigsby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Franklin Miller, Grant Hurst, Elmer Jones, Cotton Clark, Ned Wright and Jay Ball.
