El Portal Club
The El Portal Chapter of Daughter of the American Revolution met Feb. 11 at the First Christian Church in Clovis. Regent Wanda Dunn presided.
Guest included Christie Allen, Melrose High School Good Citizen, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Barry Allen, Katie Haynes Burns, Madison Stewart, the grade level winner of he American History essay contest from Zia Elementary and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jack Stewart, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. “Doc” Stewart, her brother Barret, a friend Keely Towles and her teacher, Debbie Robinson.
She read her essay titled “Benjamin Franklin —Not Just a Revolutionary” and received a pin and certificate.
Allen read her Good Citizen essay and received a pin and certificate. Mary Kate Burns, the Clovis High School Good Citizen, was unable to attend, so her mother accepted the pin and certificate.
Refreshments were served to the guest and members.
A business meeting followed the program.
Alpha Club
The Grady Alpha Club met on Feb. 7 at the Grady Senior Building to discuss Grady Schools.
Margie Woods and Maxine Grau were hostesses and President Katy Mackechnie presided.
A committee was formed to plan activities for the club exchange program. The club will be hosting the Fairfield Club in March.
The cultural arts and tea will be from noon to 6 p.m. April 4 at the North Annex of the Clovis Library. Each club is asked to provide three dozen cookies. Woods volunteered to bake the cookies.
The program was presented by Elizabeth Posey, superintendent of the Grady School, who discussed the educational activities and future plans of the school.
Valentines’ were exchanged between the 11 members present and refreshments were served by Woods and Maxine Grau.
Altrusa Club
Members of Altrusa International, Inc. of Clovis met for their regular program meeting on Feb. 13 at Muffley’s Back Door.
Hostesses for the evening were Gaye Cooke, Phyllis Davidson and Sandy Turner.
After dinner was served, President Kathy Travis presided over a short business meeting to discuss sending a requested package to Iraq. It was decided that each member will bring a bag of individually wrapped hard candy or hot wheel cars. The package will go to soldiers, who will hand them out to Iraqi families.
A short discussion followed on the upcoming district conference to be held in Roswell.
Cherly Little, a doctor of hypnotherapy solutions, presented a program. She talked about what hypnotherapy will and will not do and cleared up a few misconceptions. A lively question and answer period followed her program.
Phyllis Davidson presented a short video on Meals on Wheels, which depict the delivery of meals each day.
The next meeting will be a business meeting Tuesday.
Pleasant Hill Club
The Pleasant Hill Women’s Club met Feb. 16 at the Pleasant Hill Fire Station for their regular monthly meeting.
Nancy Barnes was in charge of the program, which was making potpourri squares using a favorite doily or a family hand-me-down of needlework or stitching your favorite tea cup design on a piece of fabric. Most of the members completed their project with Nancy’s help, except for the final touch of sewing on buttons to secure the sachet.
A Valentine’s theme was used by the hostesses, Vivian Lake and Lorraine Horton, with beautifully decorated tables. Stir fry over rice was the main dish with members contributing salads and desserts.
Lueta Clark, president, called the business meeting to order. Jean Thomas, secretary, called roll which was answered by your favorite potpourri scent. Twelve members were present. Jean Thomas read the minutes of the past meeting.
Kaye Barnes, treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report.
The March meeting will be held in at 10:30 a.m. March 16 at the Lighthouse Mission, which will include a tour of the new facility and then will dine at a local Mexican restaurant.
