Reporter's notebook: High Plains Soccer wins Hyundai

Portales resident Robert W. Pierce is getting a kick out of driving a brand new Hyundai Santa Fe.

Pierce, regional referee coordinator for the American Youth Soccer Organization, is one of several board members who was awarded the use of the sport utility vehicle.

Region 319 High Plains Soccer was the winner of a contest sponsored by Hyundai.

“We had the greatest increase in players and volunteers,” Pierce said, “so we (High Plains Soccer) were awarded the use of the vehicle for a year.”

Pierce said he has been part of the soccer organization for more than 20 years and has served as coach and referee for all ages.

“I have really enjoyed the younger kids,” Pierce said. “They have such enthusiasm.”

According to Pierce, each board member will have use of the SUV for one month.

A geology professor and Eastern New Mexico University and Kiwanis member, Pierce said he chose to drive the soccer-ball-decorated vehicle in February because soccer registration is being held.

“I thought it would be good advertisement,” Pierce said.

The longtime volunteer said he is enjoying driving the vehicle and is proud to represent AYSO.
