Elrie Capps, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales
She was born to Alice and Will Ray on April 5, 1911, in Rockdale, Texas.
When she was 12 years old the family moved to New Home, Texas, and then to Mount Zion, near Dora. She attended the Rogers School where she played on the girls’ basketball team.
On April 11, 1929, she was married to Jewel Capps. In 1956 they moved to Portales. She worked at Turner’s Department Store in Portales. She remained in her home until 1978 when she became one of the first residents of Golden Acres where she lived for 17 years.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Family members said she loved seeing new places and meeting new friends. In 2003 she was honored as the Roosevelt County Pioneer Woman of the Year.
Mrs. Capps was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lou Ella Ferguson and Lola Bane, her son-in-law, Bill Foster, a great-granddaughter and by her husband.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlene Foster of Portales; three grandchildren, Larry Foster (and wife Jane) of Midland, Texas, Shirley Prokop ( Mike) of Clovis and Ronny Foster (Lee Ann) of Portales; nine great-grandchildren, Jill McCall, Jodie Rhodes, Jana Moyer, Ty and Tanner Foster, Terra and Kaylee Foster, and Ross and Travis Foster; six great-great-grandchildren, Trevor, Taylor and Kallie McCall, and Emma, Alex and Abby Moyer; one brother-in-law, Bob Bane of Colorado.
Burial will take place at Portales Cemetery. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate, assisted by Rev. Wesley McAfee.
Larry, Ronny, Ty and Tanner Foster, Mike Prokop and Ross Prokop will serve as pallbearers. Her nieces and nephews and the staff of Heartland Continuing Care Center will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home.
