Warriors triumph over Warhawks

The Cannon Varsity Women Warriors played their first official home games Saturday and Sunday against the Lackland Warhawks, who were left bloodied and battered after the game.

The beginning of Saturday’s game made the impression that the teams were evenly matched with the Warriors holding a lead of 27-25. But widening the margin in the second half, they finished the game with an impressive 18-point win, making the final score 67-49.

Lacey Childers and Latonya Dismuke kept their team running by scoring a combined 33 of the 49 points.

Unfortunately for the Warhawks, Cannon’s Katrevious Swift and Kerry Williams countered with 37 of the Warrior’s 67 points.

The Warriors seemed determined to teach the Warhawks the same lesson Sunday.

This time, the Warriors dominated the first half as well as the second, sending the Warhawks home with a horrifying 37-point loss, with a score of 29-66.

The Warriors introduced a new high scorer into the second game; Elisabeth Leon was the leading scorer with 16 of the Warriors points, but Swift returned to the second game to score 11 points of her own.

In the middle of the game, Warhawks’ Lacey Childers attempted to push her way through the pack to score two points and rammed her face into the blocking arms of Leon, breaking her nose for the second time this season. Childers walked off the court with a towel on her nose, forcing the Warhawks to finish the game with four players.

Coach Darrell Harris took control of the Warriors this year.

This is the first year the Warriors have played outside of the local area, said Coach Harris. The team normally plays only on base and at Clovis High School, he added.

The Warriors are starting off their first season right, with a current record of 5-1. The Warriors are focusing on only one game at a time, said Coach Harris. They will play in tournaments at Altus Air Force Base, Okla., and Fort Bliss, Texas, in the weeks to come.
