Jimmie P. Adams Hancock

Jimmie P. Adams Hancock, 70, of Hampton, Va., died Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, in Hampton, Va.

She was born March 11, 1935, in Melrose to Jimmy and Chonita Adams. She attended the Field Schools until the 10th grade, and graduated from Melrose High School. She attended college at Eastern New Mexico University.

Family members said she was very active in sports, but her first love was music. She sang in church for weddings and funerals. She and her sister Jo were Charter Members of the Melrose Assembly of Rainbow for Girls. She was a Worthy Advisor and also attended the Grand Assembly of New Mexico. She was a member of the Field Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Melrose. She married Robert Hancock in December 1955. She was active in POW-MIA activities during the Vietnam War. She continued to be an active member of the Officers Wives Club (OWC) after her husband’s death in 1985 and later served as president of the retired OWC.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmy and Chonita Adams; husband, Robert Hancock; infant son; and brother, Robert (Bob) Adams.

Survivors include her sister, Lois Jo Carter; her friend, Porter Thompson; and a large extended family.

The Rev. Durwood Wofford is officiating.

Her ashes will be interred at the Melrose Cemetery in Melrose.
