CCS teams sweep past House

Clovis Christian’s basketball teams got on the board in District 4-1A in a big way Thursday night.

The CCS girls put four players in double figures — including two with more than 20 points — and outscored the House Cowgirls 77-65 at the CCS gym. Then the boys took over, cruising past their outmanned foe 74-26.

Both CCS teams are now 1-1 in district play after losing at home to Grady on Saturday.

“We needed a league win,” CCS girls coach Max Kralicek, who said the 77-point outburst by his squad might have been a record for the program. “We just need to keep playing this way.”

Freshman Jennifer Schaap poured in 23 points for the Lady Eagles (7-8) while senior Tiffany Medeiros contributed 22 points and 20 rebounds. CCS also got 14 points from Sam Barnett and 10 points, including three 3-pointers, from Sidnee Pool.

The Cowgirls (6-8, 0-2) also rode two big individual efforts — 30 points from Sara Lee and 22 from Shannon Lane, both juniors. They combined to go 16-for-22 from the free throw line.

“I thought offensively we played pretty well,” Kralicek said. “Defensively, we didn’t handle Lee very well. She played a good game, but we didn’t contain her like we should have.”

The Lady Eagles stretched a four-point halftime lead to seven by the end of the third stanza, then outscored the Cowgirls 25-20 in the final period.

“This really helps us a lot,” Kralicek said. “We have San Jon on Saturday, and we really need to win that one.”

In the boys matchup, CCS made short work of the Cowboys (1-12, 0-2), who has only seven players on their roster including three freshmen and two eighth-graders. The Eagles pressed and ran their way to a 29-7 lead after one quarter, and most of the second half was played with a running clock.

“They just don’t have many guys,” CCS boys coach Jimmy Joe Robinson said. “It’s hard to have a team and even be able to scrimmage.

“Coach (Steve) Foust does a great job with them, for what they have.”

Junior Ryan Boatman scored 17 points — 11 in the opening frame — and senior Landon Ware and junior Will Genitski added 12 apiece. All 12 Eagles reached the scoring column.

Junior Herson Corcio scored 12 points and senior Joe Ben Snipes added 10 for the Cowboys.

Robinson said it was an opportunity to let his bench get some experience.

“Some of our kids haven’t gotten to play that much this year,” he said. “The kids that came off the bench tonight did a good job.”
