Ticket: Roswell concert features Broadway flavor

The sounds of one of the world’s most famous Broadway shows is on its way to Roswell.

A benefit concert for the Roswell Symphony Orchestra is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Pearson Auditorium, located on the campus of New Mexico Military Institute.

The concert features pianist and organist Kirill Gliadkovsky, who will perform classical favorites for the first half of the show and selections from The Phantom of the Opera for the second half.

“He’s been here several times,” said Lee Cook, director of marketing for the orchestra. “He’s been very popular.”

Tickets to the show are $20, with tickets available at the door and in advance at the RSO office at 1717 W. Second St., Suite 112 in Roswell.

According to a release from the RSO, Gliadkovsky attended the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. Gliadkovsky also earned both his Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees at the University of Southern California.

With Gliadkovsky coming, local musicians are looking forward to the opportunity to present the music from The Phantom of the Opera.

“It’s the most famous musical,” said Brent Luck, a Roswell-based opera singer who was born in Portales in 1962 while his father attended Eastern New Mexico University. “It appeals from teenagers all the way up to the elderly. The music can reach everybody on a level.

“There aren’t too many musicals that have taken over like Phantom of the Opera has.”

Luck is one of several performers that will join Gliadkovsky for the concert, one of two benefit events the RSO plans to do.

Pearson Hall has good features for a show such as this, Cook felt.

“They have a huge organ in the orchestra pit,” Cook said of the concert. “It’s going to rise out of the pit with all of the smoke and the haze.”

In any case, Luck is sure the concert is something the audience and the participants will enjoy.

“We have a chance to work with selections from The Phantom of the Opera with an internationally renowned piano organist,” Luck said. “It brings the level of the show way up.”
